THRIVE is More Than Weight Loss

THRIVE is a medically guided weight management program built around education, personal support, and real, sustainable change. No gimmicks, no extreme diets, no meal-replacement powders, and no one-size-fits-all approach.

Rather than focusing only on the number on the scale, we help you understand the factors that influence hunger, food choices, energy, body composition, movement, and long-term weight maintenance.

Our goal is not simply to tell you what to eat. We want you to understand why certain changes may work, how your body responds, and how to build habits you can continue long after the program ends.

How THRIVE Works

You begin with an initial consultation with Dr. Botta and the THRIVE program nurses. From there, THRIVE continues with eight weekly 30-minute visits for one-on-one support and education with an experienced THRIVE program nurse.

These visits give us the opportunity to follow your progress, discuss what is working for you, identify challenges, answer questions, and adjust course along the way.

Your care is individualized. Two people may enter THRIVE with the same weight-loss goal but need very different approaches based on their medical history, eating patterns, activity level, medications, laboratory results, age, and lifestyle.

A Comprehensive Internal Medicine Consultation

One of the things that sets THRIVE apart is the depth of the medical evaluation at the beginning of the program.

Every THRIVE participant meets with Dr. Joseph Botta, a board-certified internal medicine physician, for a comprehensive medical consultation. Internal medicine is focused on the comprehensive care of adults and is particularly suited to looking at how multiple aspects of health may be connected.

Dr. Botta reviews your medical history, current medications, laboratory results, family history, previous weight-loss experiences, and factors that may be affecting your metabolic health. Depending on your individual needs, the discussion may include blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, blood pressure, thyroid function, liver health, cardiovascular risk, sleep, medications, and other conditions that can influence weight and overall health.

Many weight-management programs begin primarily with a discussion of diet or medication.

THRIVE begins with a broader medical understanding of you.

We want to understand what is happening with your health as a whole because that information helps guide the way we approach your weight and your care.

Not every weight-management program begins with a comprehensive internal medicine consultation. At BMAW, it is part of the foundation.

From that consultation, Dr. Botta and the THRIVE team work together to develop an individualized approach that combines medical oversight, education, one-on-one nursing support, nutrition, movement, and medication when appropriate.

Education Is a Major Part of THRIVE

Another component that sets THRIVE apart is the amount of education built into the program.

We incorporate the components of our Metabolic Health Wheel to look at the many factors that can influence weight and metabolic health. These include:

  • meal timing and hunger
  • protein intake
  • carbohydrate timing
  • healthy fats
  • real, minimally processed foods
  • movement and muscle health
  • emotional eating and mindfulness
  • sleep, stress, and hormones
  • medication management when appropriate
  • readiness for long-term change

We introduce concepts gradually and help you decide which changes are most meaningful for you.

THRIVE Thrus: Learning Along the Way

Throughout the program, clients receive short educational lessons we call THRIVE Thrus. These lessons are designed to help you understand the “why” behind the changes we recommend.

Topics may include:

Protein, Muscle and Type II Muscle Fibers
Why adequate protein and resistance-based movement are important for preserving strength and muscle quality during weight loss.

Meal Timing and Hunger
How the timing and frequency of meals may influence hunger, blood sugar and insulin responses, eating patterns, and your ability to feel satisfied.

Carbohydrate Timing
Learning how the amount, type, and timing of carbohydrates can affect blood sugar, hunger, and energy.

Healthy Fats and Satiety
Why dietary fat can help create satisfying meals and support a more sustainable way of eating.

Sleep, Stress and Cortisol
How poor sleep and ongoing stress can affect hunger, appetite, food choices, and metabolic health.

Internal Readiness and Emotional Support
Understanding what may be helping or holding you back is an important part of lasting change. We help you recognize patterns involving motivation, habits, emotional eating, stress, and personal barriers so you can build greater awareness, confidence, and readiness for long-term success.

Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health
Understanding tests and markers that may be relevant to long-term health, including triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, ApoB, Lipoprotein(a), and coronary artery calcium testing when clinically appropriate.

Maintenance and Ownership
Learning how to move from active weight loss toward long-term maintenance while taking greater ownership of the habits and choices that support your health.

One-on-One Support Matters

Weight management rarely follows a perfectly straight line.

Some weeks feel easy. Others do not.

Regular visits with your THRIVE nurse allow us to look beyond the scale and talk about what is happening in real life: hunger, meals, travel, social situations, stress, sleep, exercise, medications, setbacks, and successes.

We want you to feel comfortable asking questions and talking openly about what is difficult. The purpose of the program is not perfection. It is learning how to make informed choices and develop an approach that is sustainable, without judgment.

Looking Beyond the Number on the Scale

The number on the scale does not tell the whole story.

As part of THRIVE, we use ShapeScale, a 3D body-scanning system that allows you to track changes in body shape and measurements over time.

ShapeScale creates a three-dimensional image of your body and tracks measurements such as the waist, hips, thighs, and other areas. The technology can also estimate aspects of body composition, providing another way to evaluate changes that may not always be obvious from body weight alone. ShapeScale describes its system as using 3D optical scanning to estimate measures including body fat and lean mass.

This can be especially helpful during periods when your body is changing even though the number on the scale may be moving slowly. Comparing scans over time provides another way to recognize changes in measurements, body composition, and overall shape.

At BMAW, we consider this information alongside your weight, health history, laboratory results, how you are feeling, and the changes you are making in everyday life.

No single number defines your progress.

GLP-1–Based Medications: A Tool, Not the Driver

GLP-1–based medications may be helpful for some people, but they are not the foundation of THRIVE and they are not required to participate.

These medications can reduce hunger and help people feel full sooner. Some weight-management medications act on more than one hormone pathway. Tirzepatide, for example, acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.

When medication is medically appropriate, we view it as one tool that can support the work of weight management. It does not replace education, nutrition, movement, muscle preservation, emotional support, or the long-term behavior changes that are central to THRIVE.

Medication can be an important tool, but it does not drive the THRIVE program. When used, it supports the program rather than replacing it.

You still learn how to build satisfying meals, prioritize protein, understand hunger, preserve muscle, improve movement, manage stress, recognize emotional eating patterns, and make choices you can continue over time.

Our goal is to help you build knowledge, skills, and confidence that remain valuable whether medication is continued, adjusted, or eventually discontinued in consultation with the prescribing clinician.

What Happens After Eight Weeks?

For many people, eight weeks is the beginning rather than the end.

At the completion of each phase, we review your progress and discuss what makes sense next. Some people continue into another structured phase, while others may transition toward greater independence and maintenance.

The goal is for you to gradually develop the knowledge and confidence to manage your health beyond the program.

Ready to Learn More?

You do not need to know exactly what kind of weight-loss approach you need before contacting us.

Your first step is a consultation with Dr. Botta and the THRIVE program nurses to discuss your health, goals, and previous experiences with weight management and determine whether THRIVE is appropriate for you.

THRIVE at Its Best

Two Hundred Pounds Down and Still THRIVING

Charles H. joined the THRIVE program on October 9, 2024, weighing 463 pounds.

At his first visit, walking from the waiting room to the exam room was difficult because of pain and shortness of breath.

Nearly two years later, Charles has reached an extraordinary milestone: 202 pounds lost.

Today, Charles tells us that the pain and shortness of breath that once limited him are no longer part of his daily life. He continues to work toward his goals and continues to THRIVE.

But this milestone is about more than a number on the scale. It represents greater mobility, confidence, and the ability to live life differently.

We are grateful to have walked beside Charles on this journey and proud to celebrate this remarkable milestone with him.

202 pounds down—and counting.

Individual results vary.
